Retracing the History of Flood Damage in America
Over the past few years, America has had its share of calamities. These natural disasters have wreaked havoc on the affected areas, causing injuries, loss of possessions, and even death.
Some natural disasters, such as tropical storms, cause severe flood damage in the affected areas. In 2003 alone, the US incurred more than $2,000 worth of damage due to floods. America has had a long history of tropical storm flood damage. One of the most unforgettable disasters in its history happened in 1969, when Hurricane Camille plagued the states of Virginia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. This wasn't the problem. The disaster happened when Hurricane Camille clashed forces with cold northern storms. Rainwater accumulation rose as high as 31 inches in a span of only 6 hours. Thanks to the massive surge of rainwater, flood waters erupted from the valleys. The economic and financial impact on America was massive. The recovery cost alone amounted to roughly $1 billion. This included recovering and reconstructing thousands of homes, mobile homes, farms and businesses that were affected by the hurricane.
Some other seasonal flooding have also contributed to the costs of flood damage. One such incident happened in May 1990 in Texas, where floods caused by heavy rainstorms were seen as far out as 200 miles along the Trinity River. Agriculture was affected, and as a result, at least 700,000 acres of farmland in Louisiana were damaged and flooded.
When heat waves happen after a very snowy winter, this means bad news. In 1982, Utah experienced very heavy rains, which were soon followed by snowfall. When a heat wave occurred, it melted all the snow and this, again, resulted to flood waters cascading down into Salt Lake City. Unfortunately, when people don't expect these things to happen, so much flood damage is seen.
Another kind of flood damage, brought about by very severe storms (tropical or winter storms), is coastal flooding. Heavy winds brought about by these storms cause bigger and higher ocean waves that eventually make it to shore and to homes close to shore.
Finally, one of the most devastating causes of flood damage is the tsunami. One of the reasons why the tsunami is the one of the most-feared natural disasters is because of its unpredictability. The waves that start off the event are found in the sea floors and are hard to detect in the open sea.
The best thing to do in these situations is to be alert. When heavy rains are plaguing your area, make sure to stay updated by watching news forecasts and listening to the radio. Stock up on food supplies and warm liquids to keep warm. Have a personal evacuation plan that you can use when needed. To minimize flood damage, place all your valuables in the part of your house with the highest elevation, and learn how to use sandbags.
Sometimes, it is difficult to accept that one cannot be fully prepared for these things. However, it pays to be aware of the causes and effects of things like flood damage, as one can prepare for this any time. The more informed people are, the higher the chances of survival and the lesser the chances of panicking and forgetting. This, of course, is no guarantee, but it's certainly better than facing such a calamity without a clue. As they say, knowledge takes off fear of an unknown.
